The Hope Found in Sex Trafficking

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” Isaiah 61: 1-3

I’m happy that you’re back as we dive right into the second portion of this discussion on slavery: sex trafficking.

May His will be done.

Human Trafficking. Modern Day Slavery. Child Sex Trafficking. Commercial Exploitation of Children. Forced Sex Labor. These terms are all used interchangeably to explain this one issue that undoubtedly crushes the heart of God. I can only imagine thousands upon thousands of voices that are crying out for some type of holy intervention. And the thousands upon thousands of miracles that our God performs on a daily basis that simply go underneath our radar. He is a faithful God that works in very mysterious ways. We must never forget that.

Human trafficking is an injustice that has gripped my heart for years. And it may be one that grips yours as well.

This was how it all started for me….

I was at home one afternoon enjoying an afternoon off from work, drinking coffee and browsing the internet, when I came across a CBS special report covering young Filipino girls that were ‘servicing’ English and American male tourists. As I clicked ‘play’ with a bit of hesitation, I  could not believe what I was seeing.

Here was a young boy of about 10 years old (the age of my nephew) who could barely speak English, conducting a business transaction with a male American tourist (maybe in his late 50’s). He was selling this man a thirty minute “oral fix” performed by a six year old girl (who appeared scared and confused) in a run-down tent with a small twin mattress thrown on the dusty floor. My insides immediately broke out in violent spasms as I gagged at the computer screen. Anger, bewilderment, and sadness overwhelmed my heart as I longed to jump into that scene and rescue that little girl. But, I couldn’t, and I felt helpless.

This is where my story began.

As a missionary years later in Western Australia, the Lord placed me in the red light district of Perth (right next door to a brothel in fact). Every day I  would see the faces of young Southeast Asian girls who had been trafficked (transported by coercion and force) to live lives of sexual servitude for the perverse enjoyment of Australian men. I wanted to march in that brothel with the authority of Jesus Christ and rescue those women, but the Lord only wanted me to observe and pray. Looking back, I’m thankful for His wise leading. It is through prayer that we gain His heart and perspective on an issue. I strongly encourage you beloved, to spend time at His doorsteps before you go reaching out to others.

“Listen to My instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to Me, watching daily at My doors, waiting at My doorway. For whoever finds Me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. But whoever fails to find Me harms himself; all who hate Me love death.” Proverbs 8:33-36

A few months later I moved to Mexico City. For the first time,  I encountered girls (as young as 12) and women (18-45) publicly lining the streets and advertising themselves as commodities for sale in an area known as La Merced. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just for the locals (including law enforcement and government officials); tourists also knew where to find these victimized souls. We knew we weren’t welcome.  But, Jesus had other plans. Their traffickers would visibly loom around them, watching every move we made from the “window upstairs”. It was in this place that I first looked into the big, brown eyes of a young Mexican girl who shamefully looked away after five seconds of making eye contact. And I held the tender hands of a young woman who desperately wanted to be held and to know that she was worth more than a “good time.” At any moment, we could have been shot. But, Jesus is bigger than man, and more powerful than the enemy. What God willed was going to take place. So, we marched out in the authority of Christ, passing out roses to remind them of their beauty, giving them Bibles as a source of truth and encouragement, hugging their necks to show them they were worthy of love, and praying for the Lord’s mighty intervention. We saw one woman rescued from the hundreds there. But, it was still one life that Jesus died for and that was substantial. I’m thankful for the Lord’s powerful demonstration of faithfulness: we were never once injured, and He taught me that even darkness is light to Him. He has all authority and power.

“Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” Psalm 139:12

Allow me encourage you with something, beloved.

Jesus is King. There is nothing in history that can ever undo the powerful choice He made when He willingly hung on the cross. He has overcome all evil. Death has no power over Him. And even darkness is light to our King. And do you know what makes His sacrifice so powerful? As dirty and evil as sex trafficking is, Jesus still chose to die for the souls that choose to engage in this very act. Is there anything more revolutionary than God’s love? This right here shows you that love is more powerful than death.

Now that I have shared with you what the Lord has allowed me to experience on the mission field outside of the United States, I want to encourage you in the truth. He is doing a big work here in this nation. Sex trafficking very much exists in this country, and it’s often not out in the open. And as a missionary in the States with Wellspring Living, I have learned a very valuable lesson that I’d like to share:

Focus on Jesus and not the issue at hand. There is a difference between being educated on this issue and meditating on this issue. The havoc and destruction that sex trafficking causes is derived from the most disgusting, evil one: satan himself. Let’s not focus on his temporary work, but instead on the work of Jesus Christ.

Because there is a lot He is doing to rescue, restore, and redeem these precious souls of women and children today and forevermore. I have seen the faces of girls and women who have been delivered, healed, and made completely new through the all-sustaining and ever-consuming power of Jesus Christ. And women are being rescued daily here in Atlanta. Let’s give God the amazing praise He deserves for what He IS doing! He is making what appears impossible to man, possible through Him. To God be the glory for that!

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

“My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.” Proverbs 4:20-22

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3

If you feel that the Lord is calling you into this area of ministry, or you simply want to learn more about what He’s doing, then check out these incredible organizations (all of which I know personally) that are doing big things through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Closing the Door to a Desperate Time

If you are a reader who is struggling with suicide, I want to share a prayer and resources for you to consider today. But if you missed yesterday’s post, please click HERE for a few important facts as well as a prayer for deliverance by Christ Jesus your King. That is a crucial post, so please make sure you read it before diving into today.

Today, we are going to war for your soul. The insight below has been extracted from several Christian counseling resources, the Bible, and what I have experienced in my own life from deliverance counseling. As a Christian (one that has accepted Jesus Christ into their heart to forgive them of their sins and to redeem them from the power of death), you have complete authority in Jesus Christ to renounce spiritual deception from having any more influence in your life.

As we discussed in previous posts from the past, the first step is to cry out to God in repentance through a prayer of deliverance such as this one. By doing this, you can be sure that you have been made right with God in His perfect holiness. In order to successfully engage in combat in the spiritual realm, you must be a Christian and you must go in the name of Jesus. On your own, you have no power. Only Christ has full authority to conquer the schemes of the enemy. Please heed to this admonishment.

Next, I want to lead you to another bold prayer. Find a quiet place (without distractions) to approach the Sovereign God with your open and  hungry heart. My suggestion for you is to prayerfully review the text below and then verbally speak it out in an act of faith by crying out to God.  He honors those who choose to honor Him. By stepping out in faith and praying this today, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

With the authority of Jesus Christ and with the conviction the Lord has laid upon my heart this week for your life beloved, here is the prayer:

“Lord Jesus: In Hebrews 4:16, Your Word says to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Today I am doing just that. Jesus Christ, I declare that you are my Savior and my Lord.

According to Your word in Isaiah 53:5, You were wounded for my transgressions; You were crushed for my iniquities; and upon You was the chastisement that brought me peace, and with Your stripes I am healed.  Thank You for forgiving me. And thank You for the power of Your blood that makes me new again.
As a child of God, I am an heir with You, Jesus Christ. According to Your Word in Romans 8:17, I am A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that I may proclaim the excellencies of You, Jesus, who has called me out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Jesus, I must decrease and You must increase. Help me to be more like You, Jesus.

Jesus, I pray from Micah 3:8 that I may be filled with power and the Spirit of You Lord. Help me to grow in my knowledge of You, Jesus.

As Your child who seeks after You, God, You promise me in Psalm 103 that “You, Who pardons all my iniquities, Who heals all my diseases; Who redeems my life from the pit, Who crowns me with loving-kindness and compassion; Who satisfies my years with good things, will renew my youth like the eagle”.
Jesus, in Luke 10:19 You say, “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” Jesus Christ, You are the King of kings and Lord of lords, and I ask that You fight for me today.

As a child of God and in the name of Jesus Christ, the name that is above all names and the name that every tongue will confess and every knee will bow down, I renounce the lie that I have no purpose in this life, which is a lie that comes straight from the pit of hell. In the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke and renounce the lies that I am defeated, have no value, have no worth, have no one that loves me, and am all alone and worthless. I rebuke every single one of those lies in the name of Jesus.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the lie that I should trust in myself instead of You, God. In the name of Jesus, I rebuke the lie that I will never be loved or pursued by anyone. In fact, You, Jesus, thought of Me when You created me in the womb and when You died on the cross.
I rebuke and renounce the lie that I need to drink alcohol to feel better about my problems and about myself. In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce a spirit of self-pity and complaint. In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the lie that I need drugs or pornography to make me feel significant. In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the lie that I am fat and ugly and disgusting. I am made in Your image God – fearfully and wonderfully made, in fact. You are the Maker of all good and perfect things as Your words states in James 1:17.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the lie that I should be afraid of my future or my present circumstances. In the name of Jesus Christ, I rebuke the spirits of fear and anxiety that have come straight from the conniving and deceptive enemy of my soul. The truth is that Your Word says not to worry and to not be anxious of anything. In fact, You, Lord, have asked me to pray to You for everything with thanksgiving (for Your upcoming faithfulness towards me). Your peace that surpasses all understanding will cover me according to Philippians 4;6-7. In 2 Timothy 1:7, You also command me to not fear because fear involves torment and You have given me a sound mind and self control.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the spirit of death and destruction off of my life and I say you no longer are welcome to torment me. I am a child of the Living God who has been purchased at the price of the blood Jesus Christ shed on Calvary. Jesus is the Victor and I am in Him. And in Him, I am also victorious. Jesus has beaten death. Because of Him, I can too. I have eternal salvation and an eternal inheritance with my King, Jesus. I have a full life ahead of me. God has promised to keep me in the palm of His hand, to deliver me from evil, and to lead me beside still waters (Psalm 23). I have bright days ahead of me. God intends for me to prosper and to succeed (Jeremiah 29:11). He intends for me to live a life of abundance (John 10:10).

Jesus makes that which seems impossible to man possible with God (Luke 18:27). I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Jesus turns my mourning into laughing (Psalm30:11). Jesus gives me the juniper tree instead of the thorn bush (Isaiah 55:13). Jesus will guide me always; He will satisfy my needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen my frame. I will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11). Jesus is my present help in time of need. Jesus makes all things new. Jesus turns my ashes into beauty. Jesus gives me a new name, a new beginning, a new purpose, and a new song of praise in my mouth (2 Corinth 5:17). Jesus makes all things new.

As I wait for You, LORD, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ that  that I will gain new strength; I will mount up with wings like eagles, I will run and not get tired, and I will walk and not become weary (Isaiah 40:31). I will trust You, God, with all of my heart and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways, I’m going to acknowledge you, because You have promised to make my paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). I am righteous because of Jesus Christ. I am the apple of God’s eye. I am His beloved. I am the image-bearer of the One True God. I am a testament to His radical faithfulness. I am free because those who are in Christ are free indeed. Jesus, pour out Your truth upon me. Deposit your spirit of truth into my heart so that I may obey Your precepts and meditate on things that are true, and praiseworthy, and honorable (Philippians 48). Lead me beside still waters with You, Jesus. Restore my soul. In Jesus name, Amen.”

By praying a prayer like that, you have used your God-given mouth and Christ’s authority to speak truth into your very soul. Stand on truth, beloved. And speak it…always.

Here are a few more steps I want to suggest that you take:

1. Pray over your home. Blast praise and worship music, and give God thanks for your new life and your new season.

2. Study God’s word. Get that truth deep inside of you so that you can quickly discern the lies when the tempter comes again. Be encouraged: all Christians have to use the authority Christ has given us to combat this enemy.

3. Reach out. This step is going to take faith, boldness, and courage. I am praying that, in the name of Jesus Christ and with the authority that He has given, you will step forward. You can make this decision to set the pace for the rest of your life.

Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity. What does this mean? It means Jesus is constantly in relationship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. As a relational God, He desires us to be in community with not only Him, but with one another.

With that in mind, I’m asking you to reach out. Everything will remains completely and entirely confidential. Asking for help is an act of faith and humility because you are letting someone in to help carry the burden.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
