Repost: There is a Season for Everything

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

If we continually rest upon the divine counsel of God’s infinite wisdom, our lives can reflect the simplicity of this statement from Ecclesiastes. However, our lives will become maddeningly complex if we choose to ignore the instructions God has for us regarding specific seasons.

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Proverbs 16:3

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24

In our minds, we can be in springtime when God has us firmly in a winter season.

“There is…a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.” Ecclesiastes 3:2

Generally speaking, we as human beings don’t like change. In fact, we can enjoy comfort to the point that we’ll delay a season of change (even if it’s good) just to keep everything constant and predictable. Some of us are creatures of habit, and some of us really do like controlling our own lives.  Then, when God instructs us to do something we don’t want to do, our feathers get ruffled. But remember that life is about change.

If you’re not constantly changing, you’re also not growing. Entering (and exiting) seasons of change is healthy!

When God leads us into a new season, He often alters our present-day circumstances.

  • Have you lost the enthusiasm or passion about the work you once felt called to do? God may be moving you into a new season of rest or into a new career.
  • Are you experiencing immense pressure about your current dating relationship? God may be moving you forward into a new season of commitment (such as an engagement), or the relationship may need to come to an end.
  • Do you have an awkward tension towards any situation (a friendship, living arrangement, or financial plan) in your life that seems bizarre? You may be standing still in a season that God wants you to move past.

How can you know the time to move on?

Even after following Jesus for many years, listening for His prompting to move on can be difficult. Allow me to share a few personal examples with you:

1. In a recent season of my life, the Lord had impressed me to pray with a specific individual. Our time was undoubtedly fruitful, and meeting bright and early each Friday morning to sit with the Lord was a real joy. But over time, my spirit became more burdened than joyful, and the Lord  graciously related that this season had come to an end. Even if the Lord gives you a task that produces great fruit in one season, He may not have you continue indefinitely. Seek the Lord, and He’ll be faithful to include you on the timing of events.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

2. While I was serving as a missionary with limited funds, the Lord provided a beautiful place for me to live. After praying about it, my roommate and I agreed that I would stay there for a specific time (a few months). Once these initial months passed, we had both became comfortable with our living arrangement. On our own, we decided that I could stay for a bit longer (I still needed a place to live and she needed the income). Shortly thereafter, tension arose between us, and each of our boundaries were slowly encroached upon. At this point, I knew that something was definitely wrong, and God faithfully informed me that His purpose had been fulfilled and it was time to move on.

“Seek the Lord while he may be found;call on him while he is near.Let the wicked forsake their waysand the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,and to our God, for he will freely pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7

3. Finally, as a writer today, the Lord has me stepping into some very unfamiliar territory. He has given me a bucket full of BIG dreams, but I also only have a very limited amount of time. Therefore, I have had to choose my time wisely and bid farewell to some old activities (that have been fruitful in the past) to make room for the new items He has for me (that will produce the bountiful harvest He has planted in my life).

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” John 15:1-2

Pruning can be a tough process, and it’s easier for us to remain where we feel most comfortable. But as His beloved, we must move on and we must move forward.

“…a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:3-8

For the Love of Minerals: Understanding the Creator's Design

Minerals are a perfect example of the brilliant talent God possesses. If we look around us, we are bound to find a mineral somewhere in something. They are everywhere – in our soil, in our bones, in our oceans, in our blood, in our food, in our animals, and in the expanse of the universe.

“It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding stretched out the heavens.” Jeremiah 10:12

And you know what is mind-blowing to me? Not only were these essential minerals birthed from a massive star, but without these minerals we would cease to live. Think about this for a second. The same stars that the Lord created as heavenly hosts to shimmer in the backdrop of an evening’s darkness provide the very means through which our hearts continue beating. Wow. 

All I can say is: God is innovative.

You may be asking, what exactly is a mineral?

Minerals are defined as solid, inorganic (not containing carbon) substances of natural occurrence.

There are two kinds of essential minerals that our bodies need: the major minerals (7 of them needed in a higher dose) and the trace minerals (9 of them in lower doses).  And, just for the record, the amount needed in the body is not an indicator of it’s significance in the body.

So, I have to ask you.…….

Did you know that every muscle in your body depends on sodium and potassium to contract, and without it your heart could no longer beat? Or that your stomach would resist digesting your breakfast if it were missing the mineral chloride? Did you know your spinal cord would refuse to send the signals required for your hands to pick up that morning cup of coffee if it were lacking calcium? There’s no underestimating the term “essential” here.

Why am I sharing all this information with you?

I deeply believe that when we, as His beloved, begin to gain a real understanding of how complex and wonderfully made we are by our Creator, we can better value, appreciate, and understand this amazing God we serve. And we’re further equipped to honor Him by treating our bodies well through nutrition. We can do this by seeking out the very food sources that He provides, rich in the very minerals we need. Why should we? To give Him our best, because He deserves it.

“Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7

“This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” 1 Corinthians 4:1

Let’s go ahead and dive in to the first four major minerals: Calcium, Chloride, Sodium, and Potassium.

Calcium

Functions in the Body:

  • Helps to build strong bones and teeth
  • Helps to maintain normal blood pressure
  • Aids in blood clotting
  • Aids in muscle contractions
  • Aids in nerve impulse transmission
  • Aids in the secretion of hormones
  • Aids in activation of some enzyme reactions
  • May protect against hypertension
  • May help maintain a healthy body weight

Rich Food Sources:

  • Milk products, such as low fat cheese, low fat milk, and low-fat yogurt
  • Small fish, such as herring and sardines
  • Some vegetables, such as raw chives, raw grape leaves, dried agar/seaweed, raw dandelion greens, raw garlic, arugula, spinach, turnip greens, and kale
  • Legumes, such as soy (tofu preferred), red kidney beans, white beans, and great northern beans

Chloride

Functions in the Body:

  • Maintains fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Maintains the strong concentration of hydrochloric acid  in the stomach

Rich Food Sources:

  • Olives
  • Seaweed
  • Meats such as animal liver, shrimp,  and fish
  • Eggs
  • Soy sauce
  • Table salt (sodium chloride)

Sodium

Functions in the Body:

  • Works with potassium to maintain proper electrolyte balance and normal fluid levels
  • Helps to maintain normal blood pressure
  • Aids in muscle contraction and nerve transmission
  • Regulates the body’s acid-base balance
  • Is required for the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach

Rich Food Sources:

  • Salted nuts
  • Olives
  • Pickled vegetables
  • Canned foods, such as tomatoes
  • Processed meats, such as bacon, salami, and beef jerky
  • Canned sardines
  • Sun dried tomatoes
  • Cheese

Potassium

Functions in the Body:

  • Maintains fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Aids in nerve impulse transmission
  • Aids in muscle contraction
  • Helps maintain a steady heartbeat
  • Reduces risk of heart disease and stroke

Food Sources:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, tomatoes, spinach, Swiss chard, baked potatoes, avocados, bananas, oranges
  • Legumes, such as soybeans, white beans, lima beans, red kidney beans, and black beans
  • Grains, such as rice bran, wheat bran, wheat germ, quinoa, rye flour, and buckwheat
  • Dairy products, such as lowfat milk and yogurt

Can you begin to see how we are intricately knit together, divinely formed from the dust of the earthly ground? May we steward this knowledge well by choosing healthy food in order to reap strong bodies, all through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Fat Truly Does a Body Good…Continued

Today’s post is a short-ending to yesterday’s article titled Fat Truly Does a Body Good. If you’ve wondered just how much fat you should integrate into your diet, today’s an-easy-to-read guide on how to figure that out.

How much fat do I need?

An adequate intake of fat is greatly beneficial to our health; in fact the Daily Recommended Intake for fat is listed at 20-35% of our total caloric intake. I’ve included a simple calculation to ensure we consume the appropriate amount of dietary fat.

Let’s suppose your total caloric intake is 1800 calories for the day, and you opt to aim for 30% dietary fat intake.  Just multiply the caloric intake by the percentage of dietary fat intake to get the number of fat calories, and then divide by 9 cal/gram to get grams of fat per day.

1800 total calories X .30% from fat  = 540 fat calories

540 calories/9 calories per gram of fat = 60 grams of fat

And keep in mind, these fats should primarily be derived from plant sources (all those mono and polyunsaturated fats), while saturated fat consumption should not exceed 5-10% of your daily diet.

Adequate Intake for Omega-6

Men: 19-50 yr – 17 g/ day and 51+ yr – 14 g/ day

Women: 19-50 yr – 12 g/day and 51+ yr – 11 g/ day

Adequate Intake for Omega-3

Men: 1.6 g/ day

Women: 1.1 g/day

Heart-Healthy Suggestions for Every Day Living

  • Limit meat (skinless)  intake to 6 ounces per day.
  • Consume at least two servings of fish per week, such as trout, salmon, herring, sardines, and mackerel (baked, grilled, or broiled, but not fried).
  • Choose lean, unmarbled cuts of beef and pork with round or loin in their names (top round, tenderloin, sirloin, center loin).
  • Use legumes in recipes often.
  • Order pizzas with more vegetables, a little lean meat, and reduced amount of cheese (by half).
  • Stir-fry meat and vegetables in a small amount of oil, while adding broth or wine for additional moisture.
  • Use wine, lemons, orange juice, or broth instead of butter or margarine when cooking.
  • Refrigerate soups and stews after cooking and remove the fat (that solidifies in the fridge) before reheating.
  • Limit  or omit consumption of sausage, bacon, hot dogs, luncheon meats, whole milk, and regular cheeses from diet.

You may be tempted to indulge in convenience and down a double bacon cheeseburger with fries and a milkshake. According to Understanding Nutrition, this fat-coated meal will cost you more than 1600 calories, 90 grams of fat and more than 30 grams of saturated fat, which more than exceeds the daily intake. It is NOT worth it.

I encourage you beloved, to take the time to plan your meals and choose the healthy fats that God has provided for us since the creation of the earth.

Fat is good, but we must choose wisely.
